All things concerning Atherstone Town FC

THE FUTURE

Postby DAVE ALLEN on Wed Nov 04, 2009 9:01 am

Atherstone Town Football Club needs you the supporters of your club to get out of the house and down sheepy road to follow your club.
Gone are the halcyon days of the past where a bucketload of money was thrown at the club to get it back to a decent standard of football.
Whether it was right or wrong to do what we did to achieve this it is now a thing of the past.
The club needs support , i went down last night and the actual paying gate came to know more than 90 people and you dont need me to tell you that the club would have to cut costs remarkably just to survive.
There was an air of despondency around the ground and i was shocked by the abscence of faces from people who used to attend and now obviously do not.
The standard of football on display was very good and everyone in an adders shirt certainly gave 100% effort but unfortunately one mistake at the back led to a goal against and we ended up losing 1-0.
So the standard of football is good but the support is not there.
Adrian Burr is stepping down i have agreed short term to come back but what we need is support and so i implore everybody who has a love of this football club please come down to the home games and help the club.
Lets now as a club pull together once and for all forget your grievances about who is running the club support is what is needed.
Support also is needed off the field at running the club anyone who can help and get involved please get in touch with me.
Enough of me anyway , please you the supporters decide do we fight for our future or do we go out with a whimper.
Kindest regards
Dave Allen

Dave, I don't envy you the task you've volunteered for, presumably temporarily  . Good luck.

I gather from the various postings that Adie Burr has relinquished his chairman's position, but is still a director (at least for now, and presumably while he co-ordinates possible replacement directors). Its clear that Mr Burr has been the financial clout behind the club, and supporters can't knock someone for forking out a load of cash. But while Burr has been there, what have the other directors been doing ? Or is that a silly question ? There was comment in previous postings about there being no sponsor other than Burr's company, and I know times are hard for would-be-sponsors. But were sponsors being sought by all of the board ? And have other club mgmt tasks been carried out by the other directors ? It just seems (from the past postings) that its been a one-man operation. Tell me it ain't so; otherwise if Burr goes, then the club will be bereft of leadership (yourself being a notable exclusion  )

And I would be there to watch matches myself if I wasn't in the midst of an overseas posting.

To answer your question the only 2 other directors the club has are grahem reed who is currently in charge of matchdays and howard kerry who is in charge of visiting directors , Pete lowe is the secretary and he is in charge of fixtures referees etc.
Adrian has bankrolled the club since the start of last season and if he had not the club would not have achieved what it did last season.
There is no sugar daddy out there who will pump the money in for no return the only chance the club has is via loyal local support and what we need is a regular paying gate of 200.
If the club could achieve this coupled with a bit of sponsorship it would survive comfortably.
The club has always lacked someone with regards to marketing and commercial know how and if they could get someone to fulfill that role would be utopia.
I dont think we should knock the efforts of either graham or howard who have stayed loyal to the cause over the past 4 years or anyone else who has also been involved.
it is a thankless task and the flak that you get is unbelievable for the amount of hardwork that you put in.
My belief is that this club should be for the supporters and to compete at a reasonable level which is what we are at.
We should not be trying to compete with the likes of nuneaton because we cannot.
Yes its great to compete with them when we get the opportunity but as for support we will never be able to compete with that unless you atherstone folk know otherwise.
All i am asking is that if your heart is with atherstone town football club then get down every home game have a beer and the club will thrive.
Final note brilliant result last night by the youth team (again) bit more history made now for a trip i believe to huddersfield in the next round.
Would anyone out there like to sponsor that and make it a wonderful day for the lads to remember.

Really? Quote on here from Mr Burr on 19th May 2009:
It is certainly true that for years the club has relied on Jimmy Ginnelly and his associates to raise the funds required to compete and operate.

Mr Allen himself then wrote the next day:
A football club in the black at the bank owing very little 4 promotions in 6 years i say a fantastic achievement.
In other words the debts have only arisen this season, following the departure of Jimmy Ginnelly, his associates and their collective money. Strange that, eh?

Dear web watcher the club is still in the black at the bank and do not have many outstanding debts, so to say it is only this season is rubbish.
Even with jims help last season regarding income without the chairmans input we would have not been able to sustain the budget .
Now that the chairman has said he cannot put any more money in the playing budget will obviously be affected.
Also remember last seasons revenue from the likes of nuneaton , chasetown , leamington all of whom we played twice at home and bedworth have been lost not to be replaced.
In fact the club do not play bedworth until later in the year.
Also the revenue gained from last seasons cup run is also not in place this season.
A shortfall this year of 30k.
Even if jimmy had still been the manager this season the club would still have struggled financially to cope without your chairman.
Hope it clears some concerns up.

Read Howards Way in the programme tomorrow night, Dave is right -get behind us now and back the Adders. To those who think that as Directors we have sat back and done nowt - we have beavered away behind the scenes to keep things rolling along. We all need to back Daren Fulford and his team - they are all a credit to Atherstone and a spirited bunch of youngsters who give their all for the club.
